High School Graduation Requirements
While every state or district sets its own policies, most high school in the U.S. require a combination of:
- Credits: Usually 20-24 total credits across core subjects and electives.
- English/ Language Arts (4 credits)
- Math (3-4 credits)
- Science (3 credits)
- Social Studies (3 credits)
- PE/Health (1-2 credits)
- Electives (varies)
2. Minimum GPA: Many schools require at least a 2.0 GPA (C average) to graduate.
3. Passing Grades: Some districts require a C or higher in core subjects, while others accept a D as passing.
4. Standardized Exams: Cert (such as ain states require passing state level exams (such as Regents, STAAR, or MCAS).
5. Class Rank & Honors: Though not required to graduate, rank and honors can affect college.
How GPA, Credits and Grades Affect Graduation
- GPA (Grade Point Average): A low GPA may not prevent graduation but it could block college eligibility.
- Credits: Students must the required number of credits in each subject area. Failing a class may require retaking it in summer school.
- Grades: While D’s may count as passing in some districts, they often do not meet prerequiresities for the next level of course.
